With apologies to Shakespeare – and Hollywood – the Policy Guys boldly attempt to unwrap the enigma that is prior authorization. However you want to say it – preauthorization, prior auth, prospective review, request for authorization or even more obscure state-specific names – all these terms describe the process of obtaining approval from payors before medications are prescribed or dispensed.
As one can imagine, the specific steps in this process can be more convoluted and arcane than any drama pitched by a screenwriter or penned by the Bard himself. But fear not!
