Generic medicines are safe and effective
If you are worried about taking a generic medicine instead of a brand-name medicine, don’t be.
- Generic medicines are proven to be safe and effective.
- Generic medicines must have the same active ingredients, strength, form, and way of taking them as the brand-name medicine. They also have to work the same in your body.
- To get approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a generic medicine must show that it reaches the same level in your bloodstream as the brand-name medicine. If it does, that means it will work the same.
- The FDA checks for side effects in all approved medicines, including generics. They review reports and examine problems to keep medicines safe.
- Generic medicines are made, packaged, and tested under the same quality standards as brand-name medicines. In fact, many generics are made in the same factories as brand-name products.
