Learn how Luanne takes a unique approach to her work and how she strives to keep a good work/life balance.

Meet Luanne

To what do you attribute your success as a leader for Optum Workers’ Comp and Auto No-fault?

I attribute my success as a leader to three things. I try to be persistent in my efforts to find and answer or develop a solution. I am also able to stay calm even when things get stressful or overly busy. Finally, I try to remain transparent with my team and all my coworkers so they understand what is happening and what we need to do next.

What are the main challenges for female leaders?

As a female leader, it can be challenging to maintain a strong work-life balance as we are pulled in many directions. In addition, it can be challenging to make sure you have allies at home and at work to make sure you have the support you need, when you need it.

How do you balance work and life responsibilities?

To maintain my work-life balance, I really try to set expectations with my team and all my coworkers so they know when to expect a response from me on an issue or question. I also consciously hold responses and work-related items until work hours ‒ unless there is an emergency ‒ so I have a true separation of my time and responsibilities. Finally, I have found something besides work and home life to capture my interest and that is Pickleball.

What is your “Secret Sauce” i.e what are the 3 – 5 principles that you have discovered and executed that have contributed to your success?

A few of the things that have contributed to my success are pretty simple. First, I live by the by the phrase, “That which interests my boss, fascinates me.” This motto helps me prioritize and focus my projects. I also hold regular and repeatable meetings with my team to establish consistent communication so everyone is on the same page on a project. My third tip is just not to be afraid to ask a lot of questions – even if you know the answers. This tactic helps to level set the knowledge base of the team and stimulates the group to ask their own questions and encourages communication and ideas.

What would you say is your greatest accomplishment?

My daughter Kourtney, also a woman in leadership, is definitely my greatest accomplishment.

What is your superpower?

I remain calm in the midst of chaos.

What are you outside interests?

Outside of work, I keep busy and entertained with my love of Pickleball and by spending time with family ‒ especially my six-year old granddaughter Sadie. I also love to cook and to adventure out on road trips.
